Let’s face it, if you’re in business, you probably need to make lots of phone calls, manage appointments, view materials, and access email.  As such, most business people today need a smartphone.  While iPhones are great fun out of the box, there a few things that need to be done to truly utilize the iPhone.  Below are apps and tips to get you up and running like a pro.

  • Bloomberg – The app allows you to stay on top of the world’s markets and get financial news and analysis from your phone.
  • The Wall Street Journal – While Bloomberg is great, most of the business world uses WSJ to get their news.
  • The Economist – This is the app version of the magazine which lets you read or list to highlights of economic and business news and analysis.  Free.
  • Cisco WebEx – Businesses rely on this technology to have teleconferences with material that needs to be viewed.
  • Oracle BI (Business Intelligence) – Get realtime access to your company’s Oracle Business Intelligence software so that you can get your enterprise reports to KPIs anytime, anywhere. Free.
  • FlightTrack Pro – Travel is an essential part of a business person’s life.  If you fly often, this is one of the better apps to keep on top of flight statuses and changes.
  • mbPointer (PowerPoint Remote) – Use this app and it’s accompanying receiver application on the computer to control .ppt presentations from your iOS device instead of an expensive remote.
  • LinkedIn – It’s like Facebook, but for the business world.
  • Evernote – Need to remember something or make a note of it?  Have a different types of notes (voice, web clippings, writings, pictures, etc) and want one app to view it all in?  Want to have a way to have the same notes on your phone as on your computer or any other device (i.e. syncing)?  If you said yes to these questions, then you probably want Evernote.
  • Analytics App – If you’re heavy into the web or have to monitor web traffic, this is an essential app for giving you access to Google Analytics data.
  • Dropbox – Have access to any of your files via this file storage and syncing software.
  • iWork (Numbers, Pages, and Keynote) – Clearly there’s competing interests when it comes to putting MS Office on other platforms, so until MS feels like they have to put an app out for iOS, you are left with iWork.   And due to the limitations on the interface because of the nature of the device, iWork should grant you everything you could actually use on the phone. $9.99 each.
  • QuickOffice Pro – iWork not cutting it and you want to view and edit Microsoft Office documents in their native format?  Quick Office Pro is one of the tried and true veterans in the game.  $14.99.
